Malik Riaz has agreed to pay 190 million pounds in a settlement with UK's National Crime Agency. An inquiry was going on against Malik Riaz family under anti-money-laundering laws in the UK since 2015. The family failed to prove that the amount had been brought to the UK through proper banking channel and taxes had been paid on it in Pakistan.
However, Pakistani media has chosen to focus on the allegation that Malik Riaz family had bought the money from Sharif family in 2016. This has nothing to do with the facts of the case. Media is trying to deflect the attention from the real issue.
On the other hand, cabinet meeting, according to Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed, has decided to not talk about this money at all. It is because Malik Riaz is well-connected in Pakistani media, as well as in the powerful military of the country, and thus the government does not have the power to prosecute him.
