Tackling Child Abuse: Rawalpindi Police To Give Lectures On Child Protection In Schools

The Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Mohammad Faisal Rana has stated that police officers would be visiting schools to give lectures to create awareness on protection of children.

According to a report in Dawn, the CPO met with a delegation of Punjab Teachers Union on Tuesday. On the delegation’s suggestions, the CPO had said that he would assign educated police officers to visit schools in order to create awareness on protection of children through lectures.

The delegation was led by Punjab Teachers Union vice president, Syed Hamid Ali Shah. The delegation expressed concerns regarding the recent rise in crime, especially sexual abuse of children and kidnapping.

The delegation in its talks with the CPO also stated that due to the effective measures taken by Rawalpindi police, incidents of sexual abuse of children, kidnapping and blackmailing had been investigated, with the culprits being arrested.

The CPO in his response stated, "We have to take meaningful steps for the protection of children and for this purpose an awareness campaign should be launched in schools.”

He added that all the issues of teachers must be solved and that they should be given due protocol in police offices and stations.

The teachers were also informed that sub-divisional police officers would be responsible to implement the directives of the CPO and divisional SPs would monitor the activities to make sure that the CPO’s directives were followed.

Cases of child sexual abuse are on the rise. On September 17, remains of three boys who had been sexually assaulted and murdered were found in Chunian near Kasur. Just three days after the incident, another minor was abducted in Kasur.

Observers have argued that the incidents indicate that not only does there need to be increased vigilance by law enforcement when it comes to protection of children, society also needs to play a part in creating awareness about the issue.
