In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations mission (MONUSCO) has awarded the UN medal to a team of 15 Pakistani female military officers. This team, consisting of majors and captains, was the first ever Female Engagement Team from Pakistan in any UN peacekeeping effort.
The staff in the Pakistani team consists of doctors, psychologists, counselors, vocational trainers, etc. They were honoured at a ceremony in Adikivu in South Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo.
17 more female officers will join the team in early February. In the experience of UN peacekeeping missions, communities affected by conflict find it easier to engage with peacekeeping troops that include female troops alongside men.
