Two women involved in attacking a lady polio worker have been fined Rs110,796 by the model trial magistrate court (MTMC) in Chitral.
The women in question had attacked the worker during the National Immunisation Days in March this year in Ayun village of Chitral.
According to reports in media, the MTMC had finished its proceedings regarding the case in a short period of one month.
The lady health worker, Shazia Bibi, was attacked by Musharaf Bibi and her daughter Nasima Bibi, when she had entered their house to administer polio drops to children.
Shazia Bibi had received multiple injuries on different parts of her body when she had fallen into a drain as a result of being kicked by Nasima Bibi.
The convicts will face legal action in case of non-payment of the imposed fine, while a part of the fine would be paid to the lady health worker.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries that have not fully eradicated the disease. Nigeria was also part of this group of countries, but the country managed to rid itself of the disease in 2014.
The reason for the disease persisting in Pakistan has been opposition from the local populace in certain areas of the country. The hostility towards polio campaigns has been motivated by religious reasons, with clerics criticising the vaccination for causing sterilization and being made of pig fat. This year, there were 53 cases of polio in Pakistan, a number which had fallen to 12 in 2018 and 8 in 2017.
