September 25 is being marked across the United States as Dolly Parton Day, giving communities an opportunity to celebrate the life, music and philanthropic legacy of one of America’s best-known entertainers.
The 2026 celebrations carry particular significance following Parton’s death on August 25 at the age of 80. Nashville is preparing a citywide Dolly Day. Nashville International Airport is moving towards changing its name to Dolly Parton International Airport Organisers have encouraged residents, businesses and visitors to celebrate Parton through acts of kindness, wearing pink and supporting causes associated with her philanthropic work.
Beyond literacy, Parton’s philanthropic legacy extends to disaster relief, education and support for communities in need. Through the Dollywood Foundation and other initiatives, she directed much of her public influence toward charitable causes, making philanthropy an important part of her identity beyond her decades-long career in country music and entertainment.
Parton’s contribution to children’s literacy is central to many of this year’s commemorations. Her Imagination Library, launched in 1995, has distributed more than 330 million free books to children around the world. The programme grew from Parton’s belief in the transformative power of reading and has become one of the most enduring parts of her legacy.
