Punjab Police Sub-inspector Fahad Iftikhar Virk resigned from his job after Lahore CCPO Umar Sheikh humiliated him in an official meeting for 'answering a question in English'.
Virk said the CCPO ridiculed him and called him 'son of a donkey' as he castigated him in the meeting. Express Tribune quoted Virk as saying that he could not tolerate 'him abusing my father that was too much for me'.
The sub-inspector said he had played a key role in establishing the social media cell of the Punjab Police force and 'always gave his best'.
The behaviour of the Lahore police chief is unbecoming of his rank, said Virk.
According to The News, Virk completed his MPhil degree in environmental chemistry from the United States in 2015.
Recently, CCPO Sheikh was grilled by a PML-N lawmaker for being 'rude' during a hearing of the standing committee of the National Assembly. Sheikh had responded to a question posed by the lawmaker with a question of his own, which infuriated the MNA who then went on to chide the police officer for his remarks in the motorway case.
The lawmaker told the CCPO that he should be ashamed for making such a statement. "You should change your thinking and attitude towards the incident. You are answerable for your performance.”
Sheikh, who was tasked to probe the rape of a woman on the motorway had questioned the choices of the woman, saying the woman should have taken a different route –a less deserted one– and checked her petrol tank before embarking on her journey.
Sheikh had said that he was surprised that the woman — a mother of three travelling alone at night– chose to travel via Ring Road instead of taking the GT Road that was relatively ‘safe’.
However, after national outrage over his controversial remarks, CCPO Umar Sheikh extended an apology to the rape survivor and all sections of society for his statement that blamed the woman for the rape on the motorway.
The Intelligence Bureau (IB) in an official report on CCPO Lahore Umer Sheikh had described him as ‘womaniser’ who was ‘financially and morally corrupt’.
According to a copy of the report being shared on social media, the incumbent city police chief ‘remained involved in corrupt practices for financial gains’ during his tenure as a district police officer (DPO) of Sargodha.
The incumbent CCPO was reputed to be financially and morally corrupt — drinker, gambler, and womaniser– in the area.
The IB report alleged that the police officer established ‘illegal sexual relations with a constable of Punjab Police’ during his posting in the area.
“He did not take interest in discharging his official work and solving pubic problems and spent most of his time in gambling during his posting,” it added.
“He remained posted as DPO Sargodha from Sep 9, 2006, to Aug 20, 2007. He remained involved in corrupt practices for financial gains. He relied on then DSP City Liaqat Tarar and posted SHOs on his recommendations after getting gratification from them,” the IB had alleged.
