Journalist Shahbaz Rana has said that if Hafeez Sheikh loses the Senate elections, it would be a setback for the government because no one else in the cabinet can negotiate a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Other members of the PM’s economic team do not have connections with international financial organisations, which is why Hafeez Sheikh’s election as Senator is important for the powers-that-be, Rana said.
