The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to give 49 tehsils of the newly-merged tribal districts (NMTDs) and the settled areas the status of ‘local areas’ in order to aid the local government election process.
In a meeting of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Cabinet on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mahmood Khan stated that the government was sincere in fulfilling its constitutional responsibility for the conduction of local bodies elections through the province, including the NMTDs.
During the meeting, the cabinet noted that it was important, under the KP Local Govt Act 2013, that the new tehsils set up as part of the delimitation process be formally granted the status of local areas, because the upcoming local body election would be conducted at the tehsil and subdivision level.
Moreover, the KP cabinet set the ratio of representation for women, youth, farmers and minorities in the tehsil council at 33 percent.
The cabinet also approved the K-P Universities (Second Amendment) Bill, 2019, bringing the universities in erstwhile FATA under the purview of the KP government.
Furthermore, the cabinet approved a compensation package for goods lost in the markets of Miran Shah and Mir Ali in North Waziristan during military operation Zarb-e-Azb. A report prepared in this matter suggested a compensation of around Rs3 billion for both markets.
