Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has said that army has been supporting Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government because they don’t have other ‘political options’.
The minister said, “Prime minister’s advisers are making decisions and political forces are acting as mere spectators. Army’s role has increased due to the weak political leadership. Army and other state institutions are fully supporting the premier as they don’t have other political options.
While talking about the relationship of the prime minister with army, he said that the country’s chief executive enjoys ‘good relation’ with the army and he gets a lot of ‘support’ from them too.
Fawad Chaudhry also made startling revelations about the internal rift within the PTI government which he says led to its failure on various fronts. He said that PTI leader Jahangir Tareen had gotten then finance minister Asad Umar fired from his ministry in April 2019, and later Asad Umar – after being appointed as federal minister again – ensured the removal of Jahangir Tareen’s influence from party politics and decision-making.
“The disputes between Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, and Jahangir Tareen proved to be very disastrous for the party’s rule. These internal rifts within PTI created a giant vacuum that was filled by the new politicians who are not the ideological leaders of the party. They aren’t aligned with the ideas of PTI and they don’t even have the [capability] to do so.”
The minister further said that it was beyond his comprehension as to why the prime minister appointed ‘weak people’ to key posts. He said that such appointments damaged PM Imran personally.
The minister expressed these views during an interview to veteran journalist Sohail Warraich for Voice of America Urdu.
