The Islamabad administration has deployed police around Jamia Hafsa in a bid to prevent Maulana Abdul Aziz, a former Lal Masjid prayer leader, from leaving the seminary.
Aziz moved to Jamia Hafsa after an agreement with the government in June which stated that Aziz would not enter the mosque for two months. However, he recently announced his plans to enter Lal Masjid, citing violation of the agreement by the government.
His announcement prompted authorities to cordon off the seminary in G-7 Sector, deploying contingents of police, anti-riot force, and Anti-Terrorism Force, reported Dawn newspaper.
According to reports, Maulana Aziz’s close aide Maulana Idrees disappeared from outside Jamia Fareedia on July 15. After the disappearance of his aide, Maulana Aziz had threatened to break the agreement under which he had left Lal Masjid for two months.
On July 6, Aziz took over a seminary, Jamia Fareedia, in Sector E-7 of Islamabad, prompting the police to blockade the routes leading towards the school. According to a report, the cleric had taken over the seminary office on Monday, after which he led morning prayers and announced that the seminary’s principal, Maulana Abdul Ghaffar, had been removed.
The report had said that a protest was held after occupation which led the police to block the road towards the seminary.
