KP Population Welfare Dept Excludes Expecting, Feeding Mothers From Training Course

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Population Welfare Department has put a bar on expecting and feeding mothers from attending a training course for Family Welfare workers.

An advertisement in a local Urdu newspaper, while asking for applications for participation in a family welfare worker training programme, detailed certain conditions for aspiring applicants. Among the conditions was that expecting or feeding mothers were not eligible candidates.

In early December, an NGO in Peshawar, forced one of its employees to resign for bringing her infant child to the office. Interestingly, the project she was working for was aimed at women empowerment.

Meanwhile, a resolution regarding mandatory provision of day care facilities at workplaces was submitted in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly two weeks back.

The resolution demanded that every government and private organisation should be obligated to make workplaces ‘mothers friendly’.
