Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Saudi Arabia engaged in economic blackmail to coerce Pakistan into not attending the Kuala Lumpur Summit.
The Kuala Lumpur Summit, which is on its last day today, has Iran, Turkey, Qatar and Pakistan as its main invitees. However, Prime Minister Imran Khan had cancelled his visit after a meeting with Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, a day before the summit.
According to Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, Erdogan, in his comments to Malaysian media, said that Saudi Arabia had threatened to withdraw $6 billion that it had deposited in Pakistan’s central bank and warned of more economic sanctions in case it attended the event.
Erdogan further stated that Pakistan had to obey due to its economic difficulties.
Moreover, TRT World Now quoted the Turkish president as having said that Saudi Arabia also threatened to stop employing the 4 million Pakistani workers in the country.
He added that this was not the first time Saudi Arabia put pressure on Pakistan.
