Irrigation officials, police and other department officials collaborated in an anti-encroachment drive in Badin, rendering various people homeless.
According to a report in Dawn, the officials razed down hundreds of structures belonging to the poor and homeless on irrigation department lands near canals thus leaving them without a roof in the winter.
A couple also tried to commit suicide, depressed at the loss of their home. The displaced asked the government to provide them alternate housing.
A protest was organized by municipal officials and residents in the city of Badin to protest against the anti-encroachment drive. They called on the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to solve this issue.
The protesters maintained that their dwellings were far away from the canals as those nearer to them had been destroyed before.
