Slain Pakistani Peacekeeper Honoured By United Nations
The United Nations (UN) on Friday honoured Pakistani peacekeeper Naik Muhammad Naeem Raza with Dag Hammarskjold Medal in New York. The Pakistani peacekeeper was killed by ‘an armed group’ in the Democratic Republic of Congo last year.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presided over the special ceremony during which the Dag Hammarskjold Medal was awarded to 119 peacekeepers who lost their lives during peacekeeping missions.

Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi accepted the award on behalf of the martyred soldier of the Pakistan Armed Forces. Lodhi said that she was honoured and humbled to have received the award on behalf of Raza.

"I accepted this posthumous award for our shaheed Naik Muhammad Naeem Raza at the Medal Award ceremony where SG Antonio Guterres is honouring UN Peacekeepers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Naik Naeem Raza embraced shahadat in the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC)."

Raza was serving in the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). In 2018, a Pakistani convoy was ambushed by an armed group in the country. Raza succumbed to his wounds while other soldiers suffered wounds.

During the exchange of fire, he embraced martyrdom while sepoy Bilal got injured.

Guterres had also condemned the killing of the Pakistani peacekeeper in the troubled province.
