China has yet again delayed a resolution by Britain, France and the United States, requesting that Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar be added to the United Nations’ terror list.
China said it “needed more time” to examine sanctions that would be imposed on the militant leader.
This was the third time China blocked UN’s move of declaring Masood Azhar a global terrorist.
Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) is a militant outfit that claimed responsibility for Pulwama attack in Indian-held Kashmir, which killed more than 40 Indian troops.
After the attack, tensions between Pakistan and India went all-time high as the latter accused the former of ‘aiding’ the militant group. India also intruded into Pakistan’s airspace to target JeM camp in Balakot but failed in its mission. In retaliation, Pakistan shot down two Indian aircraft next day, while capturing an Indian pilot, who was later handed back to India as a “goodwill gesture”.
Pakistan is also under a lot of pressure to take action against banned outfits to meet Financial Action Task Force terms and in order to comply with the demands of global watchdog against terror financing, the government has upgraded a group of banned outfits to ‘high risk’.
The US has also asked Pakistan to take immediate action against the presence of militant outfits on its soil.
There is not only international pressure to tackle terrorism but opposition parties have also taken the government to task for not implementing National Action Plan (NAP), with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari questioning the government about the presence of banned outfits in Pakistan during a National Assembly session last week.
