The federal government has decided to use the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority and other legal options to block the broadcast of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's address to the all-parties conference that is to be held on Sunday.
In response to an announcement made by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) about the online coverage of Nawaz's address on social media platforms, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill said the government would take action if the PML-N supreme chief addressed the APC.
In a tweet, he said: "How is it possible that a fugitive carries out political activities and gives speeches? The Sharif clan can only spew lies. They are such big liars that they also lie about [their] medical conditions."
In another tweet, Gill wondered why would anyone want to listen to an address by an 'absconder'. Addressing the lawmakers who would attend the APC, Gill asked isn't this the contempt of parliament? He went on to add that only 'corrupt' people would want to hear a speech made by a 'convict'.
At this, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz took SAPM Gill to the task. She said Nawaz Sharif during his tenure as the prime minister did not stop PTI chief Imran Khan from protesting even when he was inciting 'civil disobedience' and torching utility bills atop a container.
She asked now why the Imran-led government has an issue with Nawaz making an address. She challenged the government to stop the address if it can.
After Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif agreed to attend an all-party conference on the invitation of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the party decided to broadcast his address on social media.
According to PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, the former prime minister’s address to the multi-party moot via video link from London will be broadcasted on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and other social media platforms to circumvent a potential ban by the government.
On Friday, the PPP chairman extended an invitation to the ex-PM to take part in the moot on Sept 20. “Just spoke to Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif. Enquired about his health. Also invited him to virtually attend opposition APC, hosted by PPP, on 20th September,” said Bilawal in his tweet.
