At least eight people have been reported killed and dozens injured due to heavy monsoon rains affecting various regions of the country. The intense rainfall has led to flash floods, causing significant damage to infrastructure and property.
The regions hit hardest include Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Toba Achakzai, Qilla Abdullah, Ziarat, Pishin, Chaman, Jacobabad, Sukkur, and Khairpur. Flash floods have destroyed houses, crops, roads, and bridges. In Balochistan, rain-related incidents have injured at least 10 people.
In Chaman, flash floods have washed away a railway track and damaged another in Noshki, disrupting the rail link between Pakistan and Iran.
Lahore experienced scattered rains, and the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted cloudy weather with possible rain over the next 24 hours. Faisalabad saw 131 mm of rain the previous day, converting low-lying areas into waterlogged zones. In Sukkur, 180 mm of rain caused widespread power outages.
The PMD has updated its weather advisory, noting that the monsoon system has shifted from Karachi and lower Sindh to central and upper Sindh, as well as Balochistan. While the likelihood of heavy rain in Karachi has diminished, light to moderate rainfall is still expected. Cities in Sindh, including Jacobabad, Larkana, Dadu, Shikarpur, Ghotki, and Sukkur, are anticipated to experience heavy rainfall. The current weather system may continue to impact Sindh until the morning of August 19.
