Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ruled that the chambers built for lawyers on a sports ground in Islamabad’s F-8 district were "illegally constructed" and should therefore be demolished by the relevant authorities.
A mob of lawyers had previously barged into Islamabad High Court after their newly built chambers were destroyed. They had broken windows at the court and trapped the Chief Justice in his chambers.
A four-judge bench led by Chief Justice Athar Minallah, including Justice Aamer Farooq, Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, announced the verdict.
The order written by Justice Minallah read that the lawyers who had allowed the construction of the chambers had taken the law in their own hands.
"The facts of this case are disturbing because the conduct of a few enrolled lawyers has caused reputational damage to the entire legal fraternity,” said IHC lawyer.
The case was filed by a private citizen and the verdict has been pending for a few years. Supreme Court had also taken suo moto notice of the construction of chambers on a football ground.
IHC’s verdict today read that the seizure of the football ground had begun in 2013 but due to restraining orders being passed by district courts, CDA couldn’t demolish the buildings. Moreover, that court said that some lawyers had been allotted plots for the construction of their private chambers without any authorisation.
The court also said that it hopes Islamabad District Bar will return the land to the public.
