As the opposition parties stand united on rejecting the IMF deal, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Monday (today) described it as complete sell-out of the country’s sovereignty.
In a series of tweets, Maryam, who has recently been appointed as PML-N vice-president, said IMF or no IMF - the incompetent rulers were not sure.
“Finally when it does come, it’s a complete sell out of our sovereignty and rightly REJECTED by stock market. After just 9 months, country is on the brink of economic disaster. #SayNoToIncompetence”
She said the “incompetent government” had brought the country to a complete economic collapse within nine months. The "the experiment” had failed miserably and all sectors of the economy stood on the verge of disaster.
Talking about the position of stock exchange despite the much-hyped IMF deal, Maryam said the KSE 100 Index was below 34,000 on Monday. “It’s no more a joke. What are we waiting for? Incompetence is eating into our country.”
Similarly, PPP leader Senator Sherry Rehman said the IMF’s wish list with respect to the power sector or any other matter had not been shared with the Parliament.
“Grapevine says that the Fund wants the Govt to make upfront recoveries of Rs200 billion in power tariffs. That roughly translates into Rs1.93 per unit or 19 per cent increase from current rates. #RamzanPackage”
She added that the deal would pave the way for more inflation and rupee devaluation.
Similarly, another active PPP leader Nafisa Shah also criticised the government for not clarifying what conditions had been attached with the deal. “#PTIMF is the new #PTI and #IMFKhan is the new #ImranKhan,” she remarked.
PML-N's Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal, in a conversation with Dunya News, warned that the opposition would "give a joint reaction against the government's anti-people policies during the National Assembly's budget session".
Ahsan, in a tweet, took a jibe at the PTI government and said people should watch e of and enjoy the highlights of the 1992 World Cup.
PML-N Spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said: “The deal of IMF with the IMF has been successful and now an inflation bomb will be dropped on the people of Pakistan. Imran Khan, you handed over the country to the IMF for just $6 billion.”
PPP senior leader Khursheed Shah said, “Following the deal with the IMF, unbearable inflation will be seen in the country.”
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Senator Siraj-ul-Haq said: “The government has bowed down to the IMF’s condition of imposing more taxes. The people of Pakistan will become the IMF’s slaves after the agreement while it will also increase the gas, electricity and oil prices.”
