The lecturer of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, Akhtar Khan, criticised the militarisation of university campuses before he was detained by the Federal Investigation Agency under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016.
On Tuesday, a lecturer of the Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan had been taken into custody by FIA under PECA 2016.
According to activist Ammar Rashid, Akhtar Khan had faced action due to his social media posts, where he spoke about human rights violations against Pakhtuns and expressed support for the Students Solidarity March.
In the last tweet before his detention, the lecturer had stated that those countries could not progress where university campuses resembled prisons or military cantonments. He added to his post, “Pakistan Studies, chapter 1984,” in an apparent reference to the ban on student unions placed by the then military ruler General Zia ul Haq.

The detention of the lecturer came days after an FIR under charges of sedition had been registered against academic Ammar Ali Jan and Mashal Khan’s father Iqbal Lala, for organising and partaking in the Students Solidarity March.
