The journalist community held a protest against the attack on Dawn’s office by mobs earlier this week. Protesters congregated in Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore and Quetta to condemn the attack.
The attack that was carried out earlier this week was in response to the newspaper’s article on the London Bridge Attacker. The newspaper had reported that he was of Pakistani origin, citing the details given to them by UK authorities.
The protest in Karachi was attended by the journalist unions of Karachi, Sukkur and Hyderabad. On this occasion, the editor of Dawn, Zaffar Abbas, said that news outlets need to be united to fight curbs and hostilities.
He added that news outlets should not use such unfortunate events to create a greater profit for themselves because it can happen to them as well.
He mentioned how hurdles were put into Dawn’s circulation earlier this year and went on to say that through such measures democracy will never flourish.
The protest in Islamabad was carried outside Dawn’s office and was attended by the members of the Pakistan Union of Journalists and by people from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. The protest in Lahore was also outside the publication’s office while in Quetta the protestors congregated outside the Quetta press Club.
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists President Shehzada Zulfikar, stated that they are not enemies of the state and that differing over editorial opinions does not mean one is anti-state.
