Jamiat Ulema Islam - Sami (JUI-S) emir Maulana Sami ul-Haq has on Friday been assassinated by unidentified murderers according to initial reports.
After initial TV reports that he was shot dead by unidentified men, Sami ul-Haq's son Hamid ul-Haq while talking to ARY News confirmed that Sami ul-Haq was stabbed to death in his bed inside his house in Islamabad.
Sami ul-Haq was one of the most senior clerics of the Deobandi school of thought and often took pride in calling himself the 'father of Taliban'.
He was considered close to the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) whose provincial government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provided him with grants worth Rs 570 million during the last five years.
It is not confirmed as yet who murdered Sami ul-Haq but the reports that he was stabbed inside his home on his bed suggest that it could be an insider's job.
