A man in Rawalpindi who was arrested for snatching a woman's purse on the road after video of the crime went viral on social media has been sentenced to a year in prison and slapped with a fine of Rs30,000.
Civil judge Sardar Umar Hassan Khan heard the case against the accused which was resolved swiftly. The accused confessed to snatching the purse after which the court announced the punishment.
Last week, a viral CCTV video showed the man snatching a female teacher's purse. Due to the force applied while snatching, the woman had fallen to the ground after which passersby came to her help. Social media users had demanded the authorities to act against the culprit. The accused was arrested hours after the crime and his photo was released by the Rawalpindi police.
