The Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has directed TV channels and newspapers not to opine on the reference filed against judges of the Sindh High Court (SHC) and the Supreme Court (SC).
"Any information regarding the matter which is sub judice may be aired but only to the extent that it is to provide information to the public which is objective in nature and not subjective, no content, including commentary, opinions or suggestions of the potential fate of such sub judice matter, which tends to prejudice the determination by a court, tribunal etc shall be aired," read the notification.
PEMRA said that on orders of the Supreme Judicial Council and in light of the Supreme Court judgement, all news and current affairs channels are prohibited from news analysis of the references filed against the apex judges by the government of Pakistan.
PEMRA said that according to the Supreme Court judgement in suo moto case number 28 on September 12, 2018, there is prohibition over the discussion on sub judice matters.
The Supreme Judicial Council has sent a notice for June 14 to the federal government over cases against judges of the Sindh High Court (SHC) and the Supreme Court (SC).
The government is expected to file a response through Law Minister Farooq Naseem over references filed a few days ago in the SJC against Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court and Justice K.K. Agha of the Sindh High Court.
Sources told Dawn that the references were filed by President Arif Ali against Justice Faiz Isa on allegations that he bought 3 properties in London in his wife and children’s name, but did not disclose it in the official records.
Likewise, Justice K.K. Agha was accused of purchasing two properties in London, but not disclosing them in wealth returns.
