Islamophobia is a form of intolerance, mistrust and hatred towards Islam and its adherents. It often manifests with xenophobia, racism, anti-immigrants sentiments and religious prejudice.
The manifestation of Islamophobia that includes hate speech, intolerance and other violent acts against Islam and Muslims can be perpetrated by both non-state actors and state officials in the West. The Islamophobic actors associate Muslims with terrorism and portray them a major threat to global peace. In addition, such Islamophobic rhetoric accuses the entire Muslim world and Islam of being responsible for any wrong committed by any Muslim individual or a group, and rejects any chance of cooperation between Muslims and non-Muslims.

It’s really distressing that a new wave of Islamophobia is on the rise throughout the West and the Western governments seem complicit by turning blind eye to “Islamophobia”.

Last year, a 19-year-old Muslim girl Maryam Pougetoux, a student union president at Paris-Sorbonne University, was attacked, and received widespread criticism after appearing in a TV documentary wearing a headscarf. The French Equality Minister Marlène Schiappa even questioned the student union’s secularist and feminist values for giving a position to a girl wearing a Hijab.
Similarly, the French interior minister called Maryam’s appearance as a provocation.
In a similar way, on March 15 when a white supremacist terrorist entered a mosque in New Zealand and killed 50 Muslim worshippers, an Australian senator Fraser Anning said that the real cause of bloodshed was immigration program which allowed Muslims to migrate to New Zealand. The senator also termed Islam as a violent ideology of the sixth century which justified endless war against anyone who opposes it and calls for murder of unbelievers and apostates.
