A 20-year-old girl from a village near Narowal was reportedly murdered for marrying the man of her choice.
Misbah Maqbool, the victim, got married to Usman in a court marriage that took place on November 4th, 2020. The couple was residents of Aino Bajwa village on the outskirts of Narowal.
Misbah's brother Shahid Shehzad convened a panchayat of local leaders on January 18, reconciling the two sides.
The agreement said that Misbah was to return to her family and if she took any drastic measures against herself such as suicide, her family would be held responsible.
However, the couple opposed the decision of the panchayat and on Wednesday, Usman filed a petition against it in the additional district and sessions judge's court to reunite with his wife. Upon hearing this, Misbah’s family reportedly shot and killed her. They dumped her body in a local graveyard and ran away.
Locals from the village allege that misbah was pregnant and was killed in the name of ‘honour’. They also said that the panchayat knew her life was in danger and so did the police for the last three months.
The victim’s family is still on the run and has not been caught. Usman and his family have also shifted to an undisclosed location according to the locals of the village.
