Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan underwent a short medical procedure for an eye ailment at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) last week, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed on Thursday.
Speaking to Geo News, Tarar said Khan, currently imprisoned at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, was examined by eye specialists in jail who recommended further treatment at PIMS. “Last Saturday night, acting on the doctors’ advice, he was taken to PIMS. After his eyes were examined again and with his written consent, a 20-minute procedure was carried out,” the minister said. Khan was subsequently returned to Adiala Jail with medical instructions.
Tarar emphasised that the former premier’s vitals remained stable throughout the procedure and that he was “absolutely healthy.” The minister further asserted that all prisoners have access to medical care when needed and dismissed concerns circulating on social media about Khan’s health.
The PTI, however, had earlier cited reports claiming Khan was diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye, a condition that, if untreated, could potentially cause permanent vision damage. PTI MNAs have also filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court seeking permission to meet the jailed leader.
Meanwhile, Khan’s sister, Noreen Niazi, expressed concern over the lack of communication with the family and lawyers, calling the secrecy surrounding his treatment “a blatant crime.” She demanded that Khan’s complete medical records be made public and that family members and personal doctors be allowed to see him.
Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023, faces multiple cases, including corruption and terrorism charges, following his removal from office via a no-confidence motion in April 2022. The brief PIMS procedure underscores ongoing tensions and concerns over the former prime minister’s health while in custody.
