As Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) gears up for the upcoming Senate elections, there are reports of some party leaders trying to get PTI leader and business tycoon Jahangir Tareen back in the decision making process in the party. Tareen is considered to be good at winning candidates over.
Dawn reported that the suggestion put forth by PTI MNA Raja Riaz to the leadership to get Jahangir Khan Tareen back in a position where he can lead the upcoming Senate elections against the opposition PML-N in Punjab has generated a debate within the PTI.
However, Riaz's is not the only voice seeking return of Tareen and restoration of his role as an 'investor' in the PTI. Many PTI leaders are of the opinion that the PML-N has a number of 'investors' who will play a major role in buying MPA loyalties to manipulate the elections to the Senate. PML-N's position of not approving the request for an open vote shows its intentions, they say.
The report further says that most PTI leaders are opposed to the idea of Tareen's return to the party before the charges of money laundering and sugar fraud levelled in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)'s investigation report against him are cleaned up.
While most of the leaders and candidates for Senate election believe that Riaz's suggestion about Tareen was his personal opinion and has little to do with the party's ongoing Senate election discussions, Riaz maintains that Prime Minister Khan accepted his point of view and decided that the party may need its 'experienced team' to effectively manage the Senate polls.
According to Dawn, Riaz received a phone call from Jahangir Tareen thanking him for mentioning him at the party’s meeting.
