The National Assembly on Monday passed a resolution urging the government to recall Pakistan’s envoy from Paris to protest blasphemous cartoons, but there is no ambassador of the country in France.
The last ambassador in Paris, Moin ul Haq was sent to China three months ago. Geo News quoted sources as saying that Amjad Qazi who is the senior most diplomat in Paris is currently looking after all the affairs. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi must have been aware of the situation, but he chose not to inform the House when the resolution was being moved.
The resolution did not speak of sending back the French envoy from Pakistan as it could be deemed as “too harsh” a protest.
French President Emmanual Macron’s defense of blasphemous caricatures stirred a controversy. Protests erupted in many countries including Pakistan after his remarks. Prime Minister Imran Khan also condemned the remarks of Macron about Muslims and wrote a letter to CEO Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg to ban Islamophobic content from his platform.
Turkey also called its ambassador back from Paris and Turkish President termed Macron ‘mentally unstable’. The statement served to increase the tensions between two countries which are already at odds over multiple issues.
