Sindh Woman At Risk Of Being ‘Honour’ Killed After Marrying The Man Of Her Choice
A young Sindhi couple who recently got married against the wish of their families is currently at risk of being killed in the name of ‘honour’.

A Sindh-based journalist Veengas shared a video of the couple on Twitter, wherein the woman can be heard saying that her father sold her for Rs 5 lakh. “But, I chose my cousin and married him,” she said. The man in the video demanded the Sindh government to intervene and save them from their families, who would otherwise kill the couple.

Honour killing isn’t something new in Pakistan, hundreds of cases have been reported but no substantial step to counter this menace has been taken by the government officials to date. This practice is more prevalent in rural and tribal areas where jirga system is still active. A more proactive and radical approach is needed to combat this inhuman and brutal act, which is unfortunately seen as a moral duty by some Pakistani men.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader Farhatullah Babar took notice of the incident and urged the Sindh government to save the lives of newly-wed couple.

Last week, a 14-year-old Hindu girl in Chundiko, Sindh was kidnapped and forcibly converted to Islam before being married to her 40-year-old man who allegedly abducted her. The alleged abductor, Mohammad Aachar Darejo, took a photo with her and the nikah-nama. The photo had started doing the rounds on social media where users condemned the incident and called on the authorities to hold an inquiry.
