Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Asif Saeed Khosa on Thursday slammed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) saying that the corruption watchdog's responsibility was not to make cases, but also submit evidence against those it has filed cases against.
CJP Khosa said this during the hearing of the accountability bureau's appeal against the acquittal of a suspect named Attaullah. "NAB should think about how its only purpose is not to make cases, the only purpose is not to 'pakar dhakkar' [catch and push] around [suspects]."
Justice Asif Khosa said that NAB should attach evidence against those it files cases against. He also said that NAB's purpose was to thoroughly probe corruption allegations, collect evidence against the accused and have them punished.
He also highlighted that people in NAB's custody were under mental pressure due to the bureau's behavior.
Separately, the apex court also rejected another appeal by NAB against a high court order regarding a deputy superintendent of police Jahan Khan in assets beyond means case.
In March, retired brigadier Asad Munir on Friday allegedly committed suicide over “harassment by National Accountability Bureau (NAB). In a suicide note, he said:
“The NAB has made my life miserable; the authority has placed my name on Exit Control List and initiated three investigations and two inquiries against me in just a year. I have already submitted my asset details. I am further committing suicide to avoid humiliation, being handcuffed and paraded in front of the media.”
Last year, Ex-Sargodha University CEO died in NAB custody, while PU Vice-Chancellor was paraded in front of the media. Moreover, Bilawal Bhutto, Ahad Cheema, Aleem Khan, and Zulfi Bokhari have also accused NAB of misconduct and harassment.
