A delegation of businessmen on Monday met Prime Minister Imran Khan and raised concerns over the deteriorating economy. They urged Khan and his government to focus on the economy as a whole and not just parts of it. Imran Khan assured that the situation of the economy will improve 'soon'.
The businessmen represented all leading chambers and different sectors of the economy. Khan also asked the businessmen to offer suggestions to bring the country out of economic turmoil. According to Dawn, the business opined that the government should focus on the agriculture sector and small-scale industries for the creation of job opportunities.
Some of them said the government should make arrangements for clearance of businessmen’s dues so that they could, in turn, do their bit for kick-starting economic activities. It was also suggested that the government pay attention to the economy as a whole rather than focusing on selected segments of it.
Businessmen also urged Khan to provide stability in electric tariff to boost industrial growth and development. They also said that an export development fund should be created to attract investors and foreign investments.
The prime minister apprised the traders about the recent negotiations, and the staff-level agreement, with the International Monetary Fund.
“The biggest deficit in the 70-year history of our country is staring at us, but I assure you that the country which will emerge as the leading economy in the region will be Pakistan,” the prime minister said.
Referring to opposition's iftar meetup at Zardari House in Islamabad, Khan said that 'they were themselves responsible for the crisis'.
