The Sindh Assembly on Thursday passed a bill that recognises women agricultural labourers as formal labour.
The Sindh Women Agricultural Women Act of 2019 will safeguard the right of women in cultivation, fisheries, poultry and animal husbandry.
The Act will raise the status of women in agriculture to that industrial workers, offering them rights and securities that will safeguard them in their employment. They will be able to demand formal contracts and also be able to seek many benefits from the state like those of the Benazir Income Support Programme.
The Chief Minister (CM) of Sindh has called this Act historic.
The Act had been in the assembly since August and there had been a clause by clause review of the act done on the assembly as well.
The CM also said that they need to recognise the work done by women in agriculture specially because the economy of the province was based on agriculture.
