#KhosaTargetingArmy Trends On Twitter As Trolls Attack CJ Khosa For Musharraf Verdict

Following the awarding of death sentence to former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf in the treason trial, Supreme Court Chief Justice Asif Khosa has been receiving a lot of flak for ‘targeting the army’.

Though CJ Khosa was not part of the special court bench that gave the verdict, he played an instrumental role in making sure that the trial continued without delays. The Supreme Court judge had set aside a special court order in 2016 which had delayed the trial for two years. In April, the CJP had presided over a three-member bench which directed the special court to move ahead with the trial and conclude the matter by maintaining that Musharraf had lost the right to an audience by voluntarily choosing not to appear before the court.

CJ Khosa said yesterday that he was offered bribes including high positions in return for favours in the Musharraf high treason case, but he refused them.

Following the verdict, one of the top trends on social media was #KhosaTargetingArmy whereby people expressed criticism of the Supreme Court judge and called into the conversation various cases which had not reached conclusion or in which people should have been held guilty of high treason.

One activist shared the picture of former SC chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry taking oath from General (r) Musharraf and asked if the judge was not in violation of the constitution and not guilty of high treason.

Another user tweeted that as Musharraf had been sentenced for high treason, it was time to hold Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz for ‘Dawn leaks’, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for ‘Mumbai attacks false accusations’, PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif for Model Town genocide and Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman Asif Zardari for Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

Another user expressed a similar opinion and said that death penalty for Maryam Nawaz should be ‘promoted’ as she was behind Dawn leaks.

Another user asked for justice for victims of Model Town genocide, in which several Pakistan Awami Tehreek protesters had been killed by Punjab police when Shahbaz Sharif was the chief minister of Punjab.

One user, in a reference to the attack on Supreme Court in 1997 during the hearing of contempt case against Nawaz Sharif, said that someone had attacked the apex court with thousands of his men, but that did not fall under the definition of treason.

The trend seemed to be a systematic attempt initiated by dubious accounts on social media, as many posts made under the trend were same, but made from different accounts.

One Twitter user shared a video of posts made under the trend, which showed the same message being posted from around two dozen different accounts. He stated that the trend seemed inorganic and organised.

Social activist Jibran Nasir said that with the SC chief justice to retire, fifth generation warriors deemed it fit to start a contemptuous twitter trend.

Journalist Asad Hashim said that following the verdict, it appeared that paid and ideologically motivated Twitter armies of fake accounts were in action.
