Human rights organisation Amnesty International has welcomed the conviction of former president General (r) Musharraf in the high treason trial against him for suspending the constitution by imposing a state of emergency in November 2007 and has said that he must be held accountable for all human rights crimes.
In response to the conviction of former dictator, Amnesty International’s Deputy South Asia Director Omar Waraich said that General Pervez Musharraf and his government must be held accountable for all human rights violations committed during their time in office.
He added that these crimes included extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, torture, arbitrary detentions, deaths in custody, unlawful killings and other serious human rights violations committed against the political opposition, human rights defenders, members of civil society and suspected members of armed groups.
Warraich further stated that no one was above the law and that it was encouraging to see Pakistan break with a history of impunity for powerful generals.
The rights organisation official, however, emphasised that Musharraf should receive a fair trial without recourse to the death penalty, adding that the punishment of death was the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment and that it meted out vengeance and not justice.
Amnesty International further stated on its website that during his nine-year rule, it documented widespread human rights violations conducted by Pakistan’s security forces, including the killing, enforced disappearance and torture of members of armed groups, political activists and human rights defenders.
