Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority (PEMRA) has accused journalist Shahzeb Khanzada of ‘sedition’ for ‘raising questions’ regarding the investigation of Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Justice (R) Javed Iqbal’s alleged video scandal.
Shahzeb Khanzada took to Twitter to inform people about the warning his program – Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath – team received by PEMRA. He said, “After several notices, fine and threats of cancellation of Geo’s license, PEMRA sends us a warning without even checking facts. PTI’s manifesto says ‘PEMRA will be made autonomous so it doesn’t become a tool in the hands of any government to target freedom of media’.”

He further said that the authority had accused the journalist along with his program team of sedition. “PEMRA accused us for ‘sedition’ on asking questions about investigation on Chairman NAB’s alleged video. Government had announced that it will investigate it but didn’t even do a forensic analysis of the video. Opposition accuses chairman NAB for being blackmailed by government due to same videos.”

Earlier this year, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen had sent a defamation notice of Rs1 billion to Shahzeb Khanzada for making ‘false imputations’ in his news programme. The journalist responded to the notice and said that he stands by what he said in his television programme.
During his show, he said that his statements were backed by documents and news reports. He denied the claims made by the PTI leader, saying he won’t apologise for his statements.
