In Pakistan's first ever such treatment, a brain pacemaker was implanted in the chest walls of two women for treating epilepsy. The device called a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) works to prevent epileptic seizures by sending regular, mild electrical pulses to the brain. It is placed in the chest, under the skin, and connected to the vagus nerve at the neck.
The surgeries were performed by Spanish specialist Dr Asif Bashir at a private health facility in Lahore.
Dr Bashir called on the Pakistani government to remove the duty on surgical instruments so that such operations cost less in the future.
