Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has approved the reopening of public transport on the roads, despite the rising number of coronavirus cases in the province.
Buzdar asked the officials to improvise a list of SOPs for the reopening of local transport, after a meeting with the contractors today.
The meeting, presided over by provincial Law Minister Raja Basharat, took place around 3pm.
It has been reported that the government will resume both intra-city and inter-city transport facilities.
Earlier, a report presented to the CM Punjab stated that due to the lockdown, the problems of the common people had intensified. People are forced to use private transport that costs them too much.
The report recommended that the transport sector should be allowed to become operational to bring relief to the public.
In an earlier address to the nation, Prime Minister Imran Khan had said that the lockdown was to be lifted in phases.
He also expressed hope public transport and railway operations be resumed after thorough discussions with the concerned officials and the National Coordination Committee. The officials were asked to come up with SOPs in this regard.
However, people had thronged the markets as soon as the lockdown was lifted on Monday, violating the regulations of the lockdown.
If violation of SOPs continues, the government may reconsider its decision on easing lockdown, said Law Minister Raja Basharat while issuing a special statement in his office here on Thursday. He said it was unfortunate that during the easing of lockdown, SOPs were not followed in most of the markets and there was more rush than usual in the markets.
The recent number of deaths in Punjab have reached up to 230 and the people who have come in contact with the virus are speculated to be around 14,000.
