World Health Organisation (WHO) Executive Director Dr Michael J Ryan has said that although Pakistan has the capacity to deal with a public health crisis, there are also some challenges. “Pakistan has a highly mobile population with mega cities and undeserved people", he said, according to a report by The Express Tribune.
He said that despite the challenges, Pakistan has shown many times how the collective efforts of government and the society can help fight diseases like dengue and polio.
Recalling his time involving the anti-polio campaign in Pakistan, he said: “I have personally worked in Pakistan for the polio eradication for nearly three years." He added that he remembers 'some excellent Pakistani colleagues' he met at the time.
The WHO officer also offered his organisation's support to the country and said 'fine public health servants' can help fight the outbreak.
On Friday, the Punjab government announced a number of steps in light of the prevailing situation of Coronavirus cases in the country. All education institutions in the province have been closed with immediate effect and all exams being conducted would be postponed.
Earlier, Pakistan’s first case of coronavirus, in which the virus was transmitted within the country was reported in Karachi. The 52-year-old patient, who tested positive for novel coronavirus had no international travel history. Experts have said that urgent action is needed to handle the ongoing pandemic.
