The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has expressed objections to the Zainab Alert Bill following its passage from National Assembly on Wednesday. The CII welcomed the bill, but said that capital punishment in the law should be included.
The Zainab Alert Recovery and Response Bill 2020 recommends life imprisonment and a penalty of Rs1 million as maximum and a sentence of 10 years as the minimum punishments to child sexual offenders.
However, the council said that Zainab's name should not be added to the law because it might cause trauma to the family of the victim. In addition, the CII recommended formation of special courts, police stations and special cells to against sexual abuse.
8-year-old girl Zainab Ansari was raped and killed in Kasur in 2018. The murder generated outrage in the country and led to widespread protests.
The said bill makes it mandatory for all cases involving the abduction, rape and murder of minor children to conclude investigations within a period of three months.
