A day after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers and the Lahore police clashed outside the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) office, the accountability watchdog has registered a case at Chung Police Station, alleging PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz instigated party workers upon provocation by her husband, Muhammad Safdar Awan.
The FIR said that after her instigation, the party workers started pelting stones at police and damaged the state property.
PML-N workers, who had gathered outside the NAB office ahead of the hearing, allegedly clashed with police at Thokar Niaz Baig. Resultantly, police had resorted to baton-charge and tear gas. Due to the deteriorating law and order situation, NAB had issued a statement that proceedings had been delayed after which the PML-N leader returned home.
Following the clashes, Maryam addressed a press conference, wherein she accused NAB of high-handedness. The PML-N leader had said the crackdown on the party workers by the Punjab Police was the ‘worst form of state oppression’.
“Not for me or the PML-N, it is a moment to ponder for the ‘fake and selected’ government,” she had said, adding that the 'unarmed party workers present near the NAB office were shelled with tear gas and baton-charged'. “For the first time I saw stoning and NAB-gardi and tear-gas shelling, but the workers remained steadfast,” she had said.
