Cleric Agha Iftikharuddin Mirza, who was asked by the Supreme Court to explain why he had issued derogatory remarks against the top court's judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa, has said that he had done so because he 'speaks nonsense sometimes due to continued use of medicines'.
On July 2, the Supreme Court rejected the cleric apology and issued a contempt notice to him, directing that he may respond within the next seven days and appear personally on the next hearing.
In his response, the cleric said that he is suffering from heart disease, hypertension and similar diseases. Due to this, he added, he sometimes gets hyper and starts to speak nonsense and things reflective of despair.
According to him, he submitted an apology with the court as soon as he realised his mistake, saying he would not issue such remarks again, news website Pakistan 24 reported.
Earlier, the cleric tendered an unconditional apology in the Supreme Court. Mirza had submitted an unconditional apology and surrendered himself 'at the mercy of the court'. The apology had stated that he unintentionally uttered a few words against the judiciary and judges in a ‘private meeting’.
The cleric had issued the desecrating statement days after the top court quashed a presidential reference against Justice Qazi Faez Isa and ordered an end to the proceedings against him in the Supreme Judicial Council. It also asked the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to hold inquiry into the properties of Justice Isa’s wife and children and submit the report to SJC within 75 days.
