The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will be honouring Dawn’s editor Zaffar Abbas with the Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award at the 2019 International Press Freedom Awards.
According to the CPJ, The Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award is given to someone who has shown extraordinary and sustained achievement in the cause of press freedom.
The ceremony will be held on November 21, 2019 in New York City. The awardees will include six exceptional journalists who have faced threats in relation to their work, from state-backed online harassment to legal threats and detention, to physical threats and court battles.
Zafar Abbas has decades of experience as a reporter in Pakistan. In April 2017, Abbas’s name was among those referred to All Pakistan Newspapers Society for his role in Dawn Leaks.
