London: Speaking to NayaDaur, the former Minister for Planning and Development and Secretary General of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), Ahsan Iqbal said that the primary purpose of N League’s Central Executive Committee’s visit to London was to visit and enquire Supremo Nawaz Sharif’s health. Another purpose was to hold consultation on two pertinent issues: the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and constitutional amendment relating to Chief of Army Staff Qamar Bajwa’s extension.
Ahsan Iqbal added that the party aims to have credible, unbiased and well reputed individuals appointed as Election commissioners agreed upon by all parties so as to ensure strengthening of the institution in carrying out the task of holding free and fair elections. He said mistakes of the past in appointing members of such institutions should not be repeated.
On the matter of constitutional amendment vis a vis Army Chief extension, Ahsan Iqbal said that all opposition parties will get together to decide how to co-operate with government. He further clarified that PMLN’s stance will be aligned with that of the joint opposition.
On the state of the economy, the MNA from Narowal said that the economy has seen a downturn unseen before. He said that strong foundations for any economy are built on public confidence which has been shattered by the incompetent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and their weak tax collection, misgovernance as well as currency devaluation policies. This is one of the prime reasons for which the PTI government will not last long, he said.
Ahsan Iqbal further emphasised that the PML-N was undergoing internal reorganisation to better accommodate the youth, public intellectuals, thinkers and leading professionals to carve out strategies to deal with Pakistan’s macro level problems.
Answering the important question on leadership, the ex-minister said the return of Nawaz Sharif was predicated upon his health recovery whereas PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif would return as soon as the elder Sharif was in a stable condition.
