The federal government is reportedly planning to introduce a piece of legislation pertaining to the appointment of judges of accountability courts.
Express Tribune reported that the government is considering amending the law to bring forth the names of retired judges and lawyers for their appointment. But the legal minds of the government are said to be divided over the matter. There is a difference of opinion among the government's legal team over whether or not lawyers should be also be considered while appointing accountability court judges.
Tribune quoted sources as saying that Law Minister Dr Farogh Naseem was in the favour of adding lawyers to the category, and two senior PTI lawyers have the same views.
However, there is a section within the government that seems skeptic about the inclusion of lawyers in the category of potential accountability court judges. This section thinks that the superior judiciary is also unlikely to favour this proposal, which is why only retired judges should be considered for appointment.
But the government may need the lawyers' support after all. A senior lawyer of the ruling party was quoted as saying that the government will have to consider lawyers for their qualification as accountability court judges if it is to support the legal community in the Justice Qazi Faez Isa case.
