Following the attack on Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi by masked goons – allegedly from the student wing of BJP – a number of Bollywood celebrities including Rajkumar Rao, Sonam Kapoor, and Mahesh Bhatt took to Twitter to express solidarity with the students of JNU.
Unlike the ‘Khans’ of Bollywood, actor Deepika Padukone paid a 15 minutes visit to the protest outside the JNU campus to express solidarity in a way that matters the most. She hugged President of the Jawaharlal Nehru Students Association Aishe Ghosh and met former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar who later thanked Deepika for her support and solidarity, “you might be abused or trolled today, but history will remember you for your courage and standing by the idea of India,” tweeted Kanhaiya.
One must praise Deepika for doing the best thing she could do as a public figure, she stood against violence, discriminatory politics, and religious prejudice. She was there in Delhi for the promotion of her upcoming film ‘Chhapaak’ but she managed time from her busy schedule for the vulnerable students of JNU.
"I feel proud that we are not scared. I think to be able to express ourselves, I think the fact we are thinking about this and about the future of our country," Deepika told NDTV news channel.
The ‘Khans’ of Bollywood shall definitely take classes of empathy and resistance from their colleague and friend. Bollywood's top Muslim stars – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan – are now being harshly questioned for their continuous silence on the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act passed by India’s parliament last month. They most probably have chosen the path of calmness and silence to remain in the good books of India’s ruling party BJB.
The supporters of BJB did not like Deepika's solidarity with the JNU students since just after the visit, #boycottchhapaak was among the top trends on Indian Twitter. The supporters of the BJP encouraged everyone to boycott Deepika’s next film ‘Chhapaak,’ They also accused her of supporting the "anti-national" students of JNU.
It would not be wrong to say that Deepika is most concerned about the future of her country at the cost of her career while the ‘Khans’ are paving their way for a smooth career at the cost of honor and respect. The coming generations of India will not forgive the ‘Khans’ for not standing on the right side of history and with the secular constitution of India.
