A World Health Organization (WHO) volunteer working for polio eradication was killed in Mohmand tribal district on Monday, Assistant commissioner (AC) Waseem Akhtar confirmed.
According to initial information, Wajid Mohmand was on his way to his workplace when a son of local tribal Malik allegedly opened fire at him. He died on spot as a result.
A local journalist from the area told Naya Daur that the deceased, who was working tirelessly for the eradication of polio since many years, reported some local influential people to the administration over their refusal for the polio drops.
Assistant Commissioner (AC) Waseem Akhtar told Naya Daur that the authorities were investigating the matter. He said that without thorough probe, it cannot be said whether the polio volunteer was killed because he reported some people to local administration or for some other reason.
The AC said that polio workers in the district are guaranteed stern security arrangements, but Wajid Mohmand was travelling from his home to office and at that time, he had no security.
Polio workers have faced increasing violence over the past few years. In 2018, two polio workers were shot dead and three others were abducted by unidentified assailants in Safi tehsil of Mohmand Agency.
