Pakistan People’s Party has said that the proposed amendments in the Army Act do not fall in line with the parameters set by the Supreme Court and hence the party is looking to bringing the necessary amendments to improve the Act.
A statement issued by the party stated that the Central Executive Committee under the chairmanship of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had decided to bring necessary amendments in the Army Act.
The meeting also paid rich tribute to PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for his infallible services and sacrifices for the country, nation and democracy.
The meeting also discussed the situation prevailing in the country and the entire region.
Following the meeting, PPP senator Raza Rabbani said that the party wanted to analyse the amendments to the Army Act and hence wanted positive engagement according to the existing parliamentary norms and procedures.
Rabbani further disclosed that the incumbent government wanted to get the said amendments in the Army Act passed form the National Assembly last Friday and wanted to get it endorsed by the Senate. However, on the views of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the government took the required parliamentary procedures and thus the said amendments in the form of a bill were sent to the concerned standing committee.
The PPP senator further stated that the Army Act was a public document, hence the government had been asked to make the document public and send it to the standing committees for analysis and review.
Rabbani further said that the PPP had decided to reach out to all the stakeholders to improve the act and make it more effective. He added that the party would be approaching leaders of opposition parties in this regard.
Moreover, a review committee had been constituted comprising of Senator Raza Rabbani, Nayyer Bokhari, Sherry Rehman and Naveed Qamar.
