The appeal against death sentence of a man who was convicted of raping an 8-year-old girl has been denied by the Supreme Court. Upholding death sentence awarded to the rapist, the apex court ruled that there’s no need for an official forensic report and only DNA should be used as evidence in rape and murder cases.
Official statistics reveal that everyday 11 rape cases are reported in Pakistan however the rate of conviction is only 0.3% of the total figure.
Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah wrote a nine-page SC judgment in which it was instructed that the government should amend section 510 of the Criminal Laws pertaining to chemical inspection, and that a copy of the decision amending the law should be submitted to the Ministry of Law.
