A group of five to six workers of Bajrang Dal, an Indian extremist organization, allegedly set ablaze a makeshift canteen owned by two Muslims on suspicion that beef items were being sold there.
The incident took place in Sakleshpur town in Hassan district of Karnataka on Thursday and a complaint was registered by the area police the next day.
According to police, canteen owners Shamim and Khamrunnisa had put up a makeshift tent to sell mutton and chicken items.
The violent members of the outfit ransacked the tent, assaulted both the women and then set the makeshift canteen on fire after accusing the women of possessing beef items.
The police has booked a case on the charges of voluntarily causing hurt (IPC Section 323), assault on women (354), causing damage (427), committing mischief by fire (436), and criminal intimidation (506).
The Bajrang Dal Extremism did not stop even after the incident.
One of the members of the organization, named Tutu Manta, threatened Akhil Gogoi, peasant leader and RTI activist from Assam, for being a ‘Muslim sympathizer’
He made the threats in a video message in Assamese language.
“Throw away the Muslims from our state, they are from Bangladesh. This is the last warning. Either I will die or kill you to make it clear. Let us announce it [Assam] as a Hindu Rashtra and don’t dare to mess with it,” he can be heard saying in the video as translated by GPlus.

This is not the first time extremist Hindu groups have targeted Muslims over beef related issues. As many as 38 cases of violence were reported from 2014-18 where people in India were attacked over suspicion that they possessed beef.
Cows are considered sacred by the country’s majority Hindu community.
